Yes! We offer bespoke furniture contracts tailored to your unique designs and specifications. If you'd like to review wood grains, material samples, or discuss your ideas, you can book a consultation with us here.

Please note: A small consultation fee applies. If you move forward with a contract or pre-order online directly, the fee will be credited toward your final bill (no credit or refund will be given if your final bill is less than the consultation fee). Custom orders typically significantly cost more than ordering online directly, as they require extensive design work, unique manual effort, and added complexity. Learn more

For a quicker and lower-cost process, you can start with our online tool to pre-order a customizable piece. If you need minor modifications (e.g. add a 3 x 2 electric hole in back panel), request a quote through the tool and add your "extra customization" in "Customize Features" step. We’ll follow up by email to confirm the details.

It's important to understand that comparing our handcrafted furniture to mass-produced pieces isn't straightforward. Here's why our products are expensive:

  1. Material Quality: Unlike many furniture brands that use MDF, particle board, or other engineered woods, our pieces are crafted from high-grade solid wood and hardwood plywood and finished with 0% VOC (volatile organic compounds) finishes. Solid wood is not only more durable but also more expensive due to the quality and craftsmanship involved. To find a comparable named-brand product without these materials, you would likely pay 3-5 times more. See here for more details: why solid wood
  2. Customization: We offer extensive customization options to tailor each piece to your specific needs and preferences. From selecting different wood species to choosing dimensions, legs, and other details, every handcrafted item is unique. This level of personalization and attention to detail adds to the cost but ensures a product that truly meets your individual requirements.
  3. Convenience: Our online tool allows you to configure your furniture easily from anywhere at any time. This user-friendly approach to customization is rare at this price point, providing significant value and convenience compared to other brands.

In summary, the higher cost of our handcrafted furniture reflects the superior materials, craftsmanship, customization options, and convenience we provide.

#why-so-expensive

At eastbaydiy, we use a clear and fair formula known as the hourly + materials + overhead pricing strategy. This means your quote mainly reflects:

  1. The actual cost of your chosen lumber and hardware.
  2. The number of hours it takes to meticulously handcraft your piece.
  3. A modest portion for shop overhead (like tools, supplies, and utilities).

This approach keeps pricing consistent and fair, no matter which wood species or custom dimensions you choose. It also ensures we’re transparent about how your investment is calculated.

Because every piece is made-to-order from real wood, prices may adjust over time as craftsmanship improves, market demand shifts, or our local lumber vendors change their rates. Our system updates automatically, so what you see online is always up-to-date.

Currently, we operate on very slim margins, which means the earlier you pre-order, the better the price you’ll lock in. To save even more, join our community and enjoy an exclusive 5% discount.

Production Questions

Most customers choose from our 10 most popular wood species, which you can pre-order directly through our online tool:

  • Red Oak,
  • White Oak,
  • Maple,
  • Cherry,
  • Mahogany,
  • Walnut,
  • Natural Birch,
  • Premium Alder,
  • European Beech,
  • Hickory/Pecan,

These woods are all beautiful, durable, and widely loved — so you can’t go wrong.

You can also mix two wood species when customizing a piece! For example, choose one wood for the stretcher and another for the panels. Some popular combos include:
  • Red Oak ➕ Maple for light color (most affordable),
  • Cherry ➕ Cherry for dark red color,
  • Walnut ➕ Walnut for the darkest color.

See more details here.

If you're looking for something more unique, we also offer custom orders with specialty or figured woods like Basswood,Bubinga, Jatoba, Lacewood, Padouk, Purpleheart, Shedua, White Ash, or Zebrawood. Just head to #custom-orders and book a consultation to get started.

We can do both — continuous/matched grain and heartwood-only selection — but these are not included in standard pre-orders. Achieving this requires hand-selecting specific boards, ensuring consistent color, and rejecting a significant amount of lumber, which increases both labor and material cost.

If you need strict grain matching or heartwood-only faces, we offer this through #custom-orders. These projects are priced at a premium due to the added time and waste involved.

For regular online pre-orders, we use high-quality hardwood directly from our local vendor, which naturally includes a mix of heartwood and sapwood and normal variation between boards. This approach allows us to provide solid-hardwood furniture at the most affordable price point without compromising build quality.

Yes, it is possible for an additional premium, due to the following considerations:

  1. Wood Movement: Hardwood species are prone to natural movement over time. With our unique design, untreated hardwood panel joints would be at risk of cracking. Special treatments, advanced techniques, and additional work are required to ensure durability and stability.
  2. Material Costs: Solid hardwood is significantly more expensive than plywood, which adds to the overall cost of the piece.

Here is an example of overall structure:

  • A: Stretchers + Drawer faces
  • B: Panels

Structure example

For A, it's always solid lumber; For B, you can choose either plywood or solid lumber under the "Advanced options" in the wood species step of our online tool.

For most cabinet-style pieces, part B is high-quality hardwood plywood by default. For items that experience heavier daily use — like desktop on study desks and coffee tables, monitor risers, or step stools — part B is automatically upgraded to solid hardwood default at no extra cost for added strength and durability.

No. We absolutely do not use any of these in our furniture. You can find out more details here.

#mdf-particle-board

We generally don’t apply stains to our pieces in our standard online ordering process (with the exception of matching stain on legs). This is intentional for several reasons:

  • Authenticity: Stains are often used to imitate another wood species, but we believe in showcasing the natural character of each hardwood.
  • Longevity: Stains can fade or wear unevenly over time, while natural hardwood color and grain endure.
  • Sustainability: By using wood in its genuine form, we avoid unnecessary chemical treatments and celebrate its natural beauty.

That said, if you’d like a specific stain or color treatment, we’re happy to accommodate custom requests. Just book a consultation with us through the #custom-orders section above so we can discuss options tailored to your project.

If you love the look of walnut, we recommend choosing genuine Black Walnut (or one of the 20+ solid hardwood species we offer) instead of applying a “walnut stain” to red oak. While a walnut stain can mimic the color, it can’t replicate the unique depth, character, and grain pattern of real walnut.

Here's how walnut finish and real walnut wood compare:

  • Color: Walnut wood ranges from light brown to dark chocolate, with creamy white sapwood and dark chocolate heartwood. Walnut finish can produce a rich brown color, but color stains can make the grain pattern look more uniform.
  • Texture: Walnut wood has a smooth surface and straight grain. Walnut finish can polish to a smooth finish.
  • Durability: American walnut is a softer hardwood with a Janka hardness rating of 1010 and walnut furniture can last decades. Walnut finish can take weeks to months to wear off.

A smaller size doesn’t usually reduce the price by much. That’s because most of the cost comes from skilled labor and shop overhead, which remain the same regardless of dimensions.

Materials make up only a small portion of the total cost, so narrowing the piece only has a limited effect on pricing.

Our pieces are designed to sit flush on level floors. If you notice any wobbling, we recommend first moving the piece to a different spot to see if the floor is more even.

If the floor remains uneven and the piece wobbles, you can easily stabilize it by adding fender washers (5/16" x 1-1/4") to one or more legs. Here's how:

  1. Unscrew the leg(s) where adjustment is needed.
  2. Place one fender washer between the leg and the base, then screw the leg back in.
  3. Test for stability. If it still wobbles, add an additional washer as needed.

Fender washers (5/16 x 1-1/4)

This method applies to all pieces with screw-on legs and helps ensure proper balance on uneven flooring.

#no-wobble

You might be worried that it’s mold or a defect in the wood. Good news: it’s neither!

Those little black marks are actually a natural result of your wood’s own chemistry – something called tannin reacting in the wood.

We will explain what tannins are, why these dark spots appear (they’re not mold), and why they’re actually a normal characteristic of real hardwood here

All of our furniture is 100% handmade using solid hardwood lumber & plywood and traditional woodworking techniques. Due to the natural characteristics of wood and the nature of handcraftsmanship, slight imperfections(like dark sports) or variations—particularly in the finish—are to be expected.

These subtle marks of handwork are part of what makes each piece truly one-of-a-kind, and not mass-produced. We view them as evidence of the care, time, and materials that go into every item we create.

If you’re seeking machine-perfect uniformity, our work may not be the best fit. However, if you value authenticity, natural materials, and skilled craftsmanship, we think you’ll love what we do. We appreciate your understanding and support for handmade art.
